The essentials

  • Earwell is a medical device that is able to correct baby’s ear deformities in a non-surgical way.

  • The treatment takes 4 to 6 weeks and is ideally started as soon as possible after birth, preferrably within the first 3 weeks.

  • The device is made of soft-silicone and is placed around the ear to reform the malleable cartilage into a normal ear.

  • A normal treatment consists of 3 visits: device placement - change of device after 2 weeks - removal of the device after 4 weeks.

  • The Earwell treatment is completely pain-free and leaves no scars to the ear.

  • Almost all ear deformities can be treated with Earwell.

What is Earwell ?

Ear abnormalities are frequent in babies. This can lead to cosmetic concerns later in life. In addition to being a cosmetic concern, it can also affect your baby's psychological and emotional development. Studies show that children with facial deformities, especially ear deformities are more likely to bear the brunt of bullying. As a result, many ear defects require surgical correction around age 6. Correcting these abnormalities is often technically difficult, may lead to hypertrophic scarring, and does not always lead to an optimal aesthetic result. EarWell can make sure this is prevented.

EarWell is a clinically tested medical ear correction product that is applied around your baby's ears a few days after birth. It is worn for an average of 4 to 6 weeks. At the end of the treatment, there is no longer an ear deformity and your child's ears have a normal shape. It is important to start treatment as soon as possible, ideally no later than 3 weeks after birth.

The device itself is completely made out of soft silicone, that is gentle to your baby's skin and ears. It can be applied at the office, so there is no need for anesthesia or sedation. Applying and wearing EarWell is completely pain-free.

The EarWell procedure takes only a few minutes. In just 4 to 6 weeks, the ears will have regained their beautiful shape.

Earwell device for non surgical correction of ear deformities in babies

Earwell is a soft-silicone medical device that is placed around the baby’s ear. The malleable cartilage is reformed over a period of 4 to 6 weeks to recreate the normal shape of the ear. It is a completely pain-free procedure.

Timing of the Earwell procedure ?

It is important that the treatment is started soon after birth. Results are significantly better if started within 2-3 weeks after birth. If started after 3 weeks, the results are still acceptable, but with a lower chance of complete ear correction. The above has to do with the malleability of cartilage. At a very young age, this is increased due to the amount of maternal estrogens that are still present in a newborn baby and which decrease rapidly after 6 weeks.

The EarWell system can remain in place for 2 weeks. After 2 weeks, it will be changed and the size can be adjusted if necessary. The duration of therapy will be approximately 4 to 6 weeks. If the EarWell system comes loose or there are problems wearing it, a more frequent visit to the practitioner may be necessary.

Which babies can have the Earwell treatment ?

Basically, all ear abnormalities can be treated with EarWell. Floppy ears are the most common, but there are several other ear disorders that can also be corrected with EarWell. Even if your baby has two different ears, or an abnormality in only one ear, this can be treated well.

Some ear abnormalities are readily visible to the naked eye immediately at birth, but floppy ears are often still developing. Because the baby had little room in your belly, there is a good chance that the ears will sit nicely against the head at birth. Diagnosis of floppy ears is therefore often made a few days after birth. If you or the paediatrician suspect floppy ears, you can always contact me for a second opinion to see if Earwell treatment would be beneficial.
